On Tuesday 3 May 2022 , the society hosted a very interesting and informative lecture by Oliver Whelan entitled ‘Evolution from landlords to Tenant Proprietors: the story of Hacketstown’s new English settlement over 250 years’. Oliver’s lecture is related to his book Landholding in the New English Settlement of Hacketstown, Co. Carlow, 1635-1875 (2019), part of the Maynooth Studies in Local History series, published by Four Courts Press.
In 2016 Oliver Whelan was awarded an MA in Irish history from Maynooth University, before embarking on further studies towards a PhD. His chosen subject is landlord and tenant struggles for land ownership in Carlow in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Our lectures will now cease for the summer months, but we hope to organise some outings for our members during that time. Details will be available later. For now, we would like to thank all our members and patrons for their support – it’s great to be back on the historical circuit following the disruption caused by the pandemic.
