OCTOBER 2023 LECTURE
Jimmy O’Toole, well-known Carlovian, local historian and author of The Carlow Gentry: What Will the Neighbours Say! provided us with a fascinating lecture on Tuesday 17 October 2023 at the Lalor Centre in Baltinglass. The specific topic was the great houses of County Carlow, which are dotted all about the county. One of the finest is Borris House (see image above), which is situated in the Barrow Valley. It is home to the McMurrough Kavanaghs, who remained in possession of their ancestral lands throughout centuries of upheaval. We also learned about Erinvale House outside Tullow and its associations with the Duke of Wellington. We are indebted to Jimmy O’ Toole for sharing his vast store of knowledge about County Carlow’s fine houses and regaling us with stories about their various occupants and connections.
