Lecture by Oliver Whelan

Subject: Evolution from Landlords to Tenant Proprietors: the story of Hacketstown’s new English settlement over 250 years.

In 2016 Oliver Whelan was awarded an MA in Irish history from Maynooth University, before embarking on further studies towards a PhD. His subject is landlord and tenant struggles for land ownership in Carlow in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His lecture is related to his book Landholding in the New English Settlement of Hacketstown, Co. Carlow, 1635-1875 (2019), part of the Maynooth Studies in Local History series, published by Four Courts Press.
